Since You Asked

This week I’ve been combing through my drafts folder and finding a lot of posts I started and never finished. Always good to do some housekeeping (blog keeping?) Anyway, here’s a writing prompt I started working on a couple of months ago in the wee hours of the night.

1. What’s an unpopular opinion you have?

Having a kid in diapers is a lot easier than having a potty trained toddler. Why? Because a kid in a diaper can be taken care of on my time. If I’m in the grocery store, and my kid pees in a diaper, I can take care of it as soon as it’s convenient. But if I’m in the grocery store, and my potty trained kid needs to pee, I have to drop everything and book it to the bathroom before the kid has an accident. I once had a kid tell me she needed to pee while I was in line for self checkout. By the time I checked out, she’d peed on the floor. It pooled around the shopping cart wheels, and I had to push the cart and drag pee across the floor to get it out of the way so an employee could clean it up. Then the poor employee had to wipe up the wheel streaks and clean off the wheels of the shopping cart. And let’s not forget all of the other customers that saw it happen, and the fact that I had to go tell an employee to begin with.

2. What’s a habit you’re currently trying to change or develop?

I’ve been eating breakfast later in the morning. I’ve always eaten really early - by 6:00-7:00 - but I’ve been trying to hold off until 9:00-ish lately. Helps me not get super hungry at work.

3. How do you find peace or calm in your life?

Lexapro and making Scotty take the kids somewhere so I can be home alone.

4. What’s something that people often misunderstand about you?

I’m often told that I’m quiet, and a lot of people have told me that they thought I was “stuck up” until they got to know me. I am quiet a lot of the time, but it’s usually because I’m just observing what’s going on around me. It’s just what I do. Also, I have delayed processing, so if I’m in a busy place or a group, I often can’t understand what anyone is saying, so sometimes I’m quiet because I don’t know what anyone is saying.

5. What’s a moment in your life that made you feel incredibly proud?

When I graduated with my degree. I didn’t think I’d ever do it.

6. How do you deal with loneliness or isolation?

Eating. Duh.

7. What’s a life lesson that you wish you would have learned earlier?

Loneliness doesn’t always look like loneliness. Just because a person seems like they are surrounded by friends and community doesn’t mean they aren’t lonely or struggling.

8. What’s an experience that has made you stronger?

I don’t know. I’m supposed to get stronger from life experiences, but I think I’m actually getting weaker. I feel less and less capable of handling things as time goes on.

9. How do you handle situations that are out of your control?

I wish someone who knows me really well could answer this about me because I honestly don’t know. I feel like I don’t handle these situations very well because I’m a control freak. But sometimes I’m totally chill and recognize that there’s nothing I can do. I don’t know which is my truest self.

10. What’s a passion or a hobby that you spend a lot of time on?

Gardening, TV shows, decorating my house, cooking, and blogging.

11. What’s a fear you’ve conquered, and how did you do it?

When I was a kid I was terrified of being shot. I used to live on a busy street, and I thought our house was a perfect target for a drive by shooting. I was scared to be in my front yard out even in the rooms at the front of the house (due to the windows). I have no idea how I got over this fear.

12. How do you express love or affection?

Feeding people and giving gifts.

13. What’s a significant risk you’ve taken in your life?

Getting married at 19 and having kids.

14. How do you stay motivated or inspired?

By making Ta Da lists instead of To Do lists.

15. What’s a goal you’re working toward now?

Getting our house paid off. Unfortunately this year has been really expensive in the areas, donuts not happening as soon as we planned (by Nicky’s graduation).

16. What’s a piece of wisdom you try to live by?

Create horseshoes instead of circles.

17. How do you deal with failure or setbacks?

I don’t. I’ve never learned how to fail beautifully. I beat myself up. I feel embarrassed. I’ve never learned to cope.

18. What’s something you believe strongly in and why?

Everyone needs to know what to do if you accidentally chop off a finger. Do some research and make a plan. Why? Because our friend Kevin put his nubs on ice, and they weren’t able to save them.

19. What’s a cultural tradition you love and why?

Potlucks and BBQ’s. Because I love food!

20. How do you think others perceive you?

I really don’t know. I always worry that people don’t like me or that they think I’m annoying, but I’ve somehow managed to keep a lot of long-term friends, so maybe I’m okay.

21. What’s a memory that brings you joy?

Moments on family vacations where everyone is getting along, and we soak in the magic of where we are. This happens sometimes when we are in a place like Downtown Disney, and we hang out and listen to a live band after dark, or when we share “two goods and a bad” with everyone at the end of each day.

22. What’s a challenge you’re currently facing?

Letting go of my son. I have to let him grow up, and it’s hard having him choose other people and other priorities over our home and our family.

23. What’s something about the world that fascinates you?

 Cults.

24.  What’s something you’ve changed your mind about?

When I was a young adult, I wanted to live in a big, fancy house in a more affluent area. I thought my current house was our "five-year" house. Instead, it's our "twenty-one-year" house, and having a big, fancy house isn't important or impressive to me at all. Sure, I'd like a little more wiggle room in our home (a bigger kitchen and gathering space would be lovely), but I'm pretty happy with what we have whereas 20 years ago, this wasn't good enough for me.

25. What’s something you’ve always wanted to learn to do?

Sight read music and play the piano. I would also like to be really good at making bread items. I am mediocre (as in, my breads are edible), but I want to be fabulous! I want yeast to speak to me like snakes speak to Harry Potter.

26. How do you handle criticism?

By remembering every critique I've been given throughout my entire life and beating myself up over it all. In other words - most unhealthily.

27. What’s a topic you’re really interested in?

Just one? How about forty!

28. How do you like to celebrate your achievements?

Food.

I will now celebrate the baking of 250 cookies by treating myself to a baker’s dozen from Einstein Bagels

29. What’s something you’re really good at, and how did you become good at it?

Budgeting, price comparison, meal planning, and mass food production. I learned a lot of these skills in school. I was required to take financial skills courses at both colleges I attended. I’ve also done Dave Ramsay’s financial university course and the Church’s self-reliance course for personal finance. I’ve always had the goal to live within our means, so I’ve always been careful with money, and that extends to food because it’s one of the biggest expenses.

30. What’s a personal rule you never break?

I never wear shirts on vacation that indicate where I'm from (i.e. no U of U or Utah Jazz or the like - not that I even own any). I also never wear Disney garb to Universal or vice versa.

Currently (June 2025 Edition)

Watching:

Benny and Joon

Wearing: a shirt from my work and denim shorts.

Annoyed by: Sam’s Club not letting me order the mayo I want (in the Best Foods squeeze bottle).

Craving: nothing. Daisy and I made 150 cookies tonight, and I had to taste test too many of them. But really, I had to make sure they were decent because I swapped out half the butter for applesauce.

Buying: a missionary wardrobe, lots and lots of food (for girls’ camp and for Nicky’s mission open house), and gas (I’m currently doing five pickups/drop offs a day for my kids each weekday).

Eating: leftover baked potatoes which I crafted into potato salad.

Laughing about: the employees at the baseball stadium playing “Closing Time” to get us loiterers to leave the other night.

Singing: “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye.

But also “Closing Time.”

Suffering from: PMDD like clockwork. Watch out for Day 19.

Dreading: sleeping. I have the most miserable nights. I can’t sleep. I sweat. My feet hurt. I kick all night. I have to get up and pee at least three times. I’m always wide awake at 4:00 a.m. and if I finally shut down, the birds in the tree outside my window start their morning banter, and I want to pull my hair out.

Proud of myself for: nothing lately.

Missing: Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Drinking: Diet Coke. I’ve never been a Diet Coke girl. In fact, I’ve always found it quite disgusting. But something the past month, it’s become my drink. I don’t even know how to handle this life change!

Enjoying: having a helpful daughter. Daisy has been a gem lately. Not always… but often.

Sick of: Zoe and Eva fighting over everything. How to pronounce words… the names of characters in TV shows… the order of the planets in the solar system… song lyrics… whose dollar is on the counter… they have a special gift for turning anything into an argument.

Listening to:

I’m still having a really hard time reading and listening to audiobooks.

Loving: gardening season. It’s one of the only things I like about summer.

Hating: my hair. I’ve lost about 75% of my hair in the past three years. I have no idea why. The texture has completely changed. It’s so thin and so short. It’s stiff and dry. It doesn’t style. I’ve tried so many products and hair systems, and nothing helps. Last week I had a protein treatment done, and I don’t think it’s made a darn difference.

Hoping: to take advantage of all of the days off and go on some little vacations during the coming school year (winter break is 28 days long - heaven help me!)

Wanting: a vintage Bronco convertible or a vintage VW bug.

Wondering: how I manage to accidentally take screenshots almost everyday, why my finger always ends up in my photos, and how I’m going to survive in the world as AI takes over.

I’ve never seen Lethal Weapon, but I feel this

Feeling: rather tired. I’ve been up since 4:00 a.m. and I hit the ground running today.

Cooking: Slow Cooker Asian Pork (which we used in rice bowls).

Avoiding: paying medical bills. This year has been a doozy so far.

Needing: a phone detox and several hours of deep meditation, even though both of those things sound awful.

Grateful for: pleasant people. Now I just need to try harder to be one.

It’s Summer Break (and ten other random facts)

Fact #1: A couple of weeks ago I found this doll at the thrift store, and gave her a makeover.

Before

After

Then I took her for a drive and handed her off to Addie, and said, "Here! Find somewhere to put this for your mom!"

Buckle up, Babe

A little while later, Addie sent me this photo:

Patiently waiting in the closet

Anyway, her name is Odessa, and I love her very much.

Fact #2: Last week I had to go to a neurologist and have an EMG. They were addressing my neuropathy and trying to see if they could determine a cause. As with everything else in my life, they didn’t have any answers. I’ve had two different rounds of labs done and now the EMG. I have another round of labs ordered, but I’m not feeling hopeful that we’ll find any solutions. I think I might just hurt for the rest of my life.

I got to wear these fancy hospital shorts:

Disposable shorts

Fact #3: A couple of weekends ago I got to visit with my sister from California and my friend Shannon from Idaho!

Liz & Britt

Britt & Shannon (aka: Brown Gravy)

Fact #4: Last week, Lala and I went to a VIP event for her work. We got to tour the homes from the reality show Rock the Block (full disclosure: I’ve never even heard of it). It was pretty fun, and we got to eat some yummy food and bring home some swag bags.

Our weird washed out photo (the backdrop was black!)

Fact #5: The night before graduation, Scotty helped me put out a yard sign that said “Class of 2025.” He was so proud when it got to this point, and he sat out in the yard waving to all the neighbors for a while.

Fact #6: This year in school, Nicky took AP Ceramics. It was very different from the other AP classes he has taken because he had to create a portfolio rather than take a final test. I’m excited to see what he scores. He wasn’t going to do it, but his ceramics instructor basically said, “You’re doing this!”

(I love a good “teacher made me do it because he saw my potential even though I resisted” success story).

Nicky created some pretty cool pieces over the years. He ended up taking pottery classes every year of high school. He had one pot, in particular, that won a few awards and was displayed in a museum.

Some of Nicky’s work

Fact #7: Summer weather is upon us!

Slip n sliding’

Fact #8: Daisy made cinnamon rolls without my help! I’ve waited my whole life for this!

Fact #9: Other important people who graduated with Nicky:

My Briana Whitney:

And my Addie

Fact #10: Zoe got her hard cast on today (it’s been a week since she broke her arm). This is the first broken bone we’ve had in the family. Can you believe that?

She will have the cast for three weeks. She’s having a hard time with it and is losing patience over everything she can’t do.

Happy It Happened - Week 6

We have a few weeks then Nicky leaves on his mission. I will likely continue to write these posts until he’s gone. I’m trying to enjoy as much time with him as I can!

Here are our Happy It Happened moments from this past week:

Last Sunday night we stayed at a hotel in Layton spontaneously and went to the Syracuse temple open house early Monday morning.

It was great timing because Nicky will go through the temple to receive his endowment next week.

In the afternoon we went to see Lilo & Stitch.

Then that night we stopped by the cemetery for Memorial Day and for Nicky to see a few graves before he leaves.

Tuesday was graduation.

On Wednesday Eva and Zoe still had school, so I wanted to take Nicky and Daisy to do something fun. I ended up taking them to the zoo where they relived their childhoods, and we had a blast!

I was shocked because it wasn’t crowded, and the animals were very active. I was expecting loads of busses on field trips, but there wasn’t a single school group to be seen!

That night, Zoe broke her arm. It’s our first broken bone, if you can believe that! (Don’t worry, we’ve had lots of other problems to make up for it ).

Trampoline (to answer your question). We see the orthopedic specialist later this week for a hard cast and further assessment.

Thursday was officially the last day of school. We went to the elementary school to watch the “sixth grade clap out.” At our school, the kids begin kindergarten with a “clap in.” The student body line the halls and cheer for the kindergartners as they arrive at school on their first day. Then, when they are leaving elementary school to go to junior high, they are clapped out. Since Nicky and Daisy didn’t have school, they were able to come see Zoe at the clap out. Now I only have one kid in elementary school.

On Friday, all the girls had plans in the evening, so it was just Scotty, Nicky, and me. It’s rare for Nicky to not have plans, but he was leaving for Disney World with friends later that night, so most of his social circle was tied up with getting ready which meant we had him all to ourselves for a bit! We ended up going to dinner at a Chinese restaurant that Nicky pointed out could close before he gets back from his mission (the owner is old and tired and frankly, deserves to retire. I’ve been eating at his restaurant for 25 years!)

After dinner, we went and got all of Nicky’s clothing for the temple. It’s coming up before we know it!

That night we drove Nicky and three friends to the airport (in addition to the other 22 kids that went on the trip).

Nicky is in Florida for a week and then he turns around and leaves on another week-long trip with friends. He’ll be gone for half of the last month leading to his mission. I guess he’s just trying to get us used to that empty bedroom.

Graduated!

I’ve wanted to post a little more about Nicky’s graduation for the sake of memory and documentation of life’s big events, but I don’t really know what to say about it.

We went to a big arena. It was long and boring (like graduations are).

That’s it, I guess.

People keep asking me how I’m doing, and honestly, by the time graduation rolled around, I was more than ready for it. Not a tear to shed over Nicky being done with high school! I’m a little more emotional that he will be leaving on a mission, but even then, I’m ready for it.

It’s time for this boy to enter the next phase of life. I think I’d be more emotional if he were going away for college. I feel like that’s scarier. Instead, he’s going to a little island where he will have a 10:00 curfew every night, no access to instagram, a weekly phone call to his mom and dad, and his friends can’t track his location anymore. It’s everything I could ask for!

Here are a few photos from graduation:

A little backstory: on opening night of The Music Man, we discovered a pretty big error in the programs (a few pages were left out). They all had to be reprinted, so there were several boxes of them that weren’t able to be used.

For months the programs have been resurfacing as pranks. Nicky’s Jeep has been covered in them at least a dozen times. They’ve been left on porches disguised as Christmas gifts. They’ve been crafted into novelty items, like kites. Twice last week we came home and found our yard covered in them.

So I can’t say we were surprised when Nicky opened his Diploma of Merit and found this:

After the ceremony, we had dinner at my mom’s house - catered by Nicky and Scotty’s favorite Mexican restaurant.

All of Nicky’s grandparents were able to come:

It ended up being a good (and long and exhausting) day.
