The Spring Break Rundown

Today my kids went back to school after spring break. We didn't have any big plans for the week (except for Daisy who got to go on a school trip ). We stuck around close to home and had a lot of appointments. We made up for our lack of adventure by eating out way too much, Here are some of the events of spring break 2026:

-Went to Disneyland (Daisy)

-Celebrated Easter and listened to General Conference

-Went birthday shopping (Eva)

-Slept over and Grandma and Grandpa's house (Eva)

-Went to a trampoline park (all the girls)

-Went to another trampoline park (Eva)

-Went to see the new Mario movie

-Had dentist appointments (the girls and me)

-Worked (Daisy and me)

-Went to Phantom of the Opera (Scotty and me)

-Had a hair appointment (Daisy)

-Went to the zoo

-Went to Daisy's best friend's mission call opening

Cutest tears

-Went to a baptism

-Had Game Night

-Slept in a tent for a week (Eva)

-Had a family birthday party for Eva

Honorary birthday party attendee

Our kids tend to have breakdowns right before going back to school, and they were right on schedule for Sunday night at 7:00. All of a sudden everyone needed to shower and do homework, and all hell broke lose as each girl entered crisis mode simultaneously.

Every time.

EVERY

DANG

TIME!

Easter 2026

It’s been a week since Easter, so it’s probably time to document the holiday before I forget how it all went down.

Our festivities began on the 29th - Palm Sunday. Since our Church’s General Conference fell on Easter Sunday, we had our Easter program on Palm Sunday. Daisy and I went to hear our friend Whitney sing at her church. Then we went to our church. Have I mentioned that Scotty was recently put in the bishopric? (No, I have not). Palm Sunday was the first meeting we had with the new bishopric.

Some years we get Easter dresses. Some years we don’t. This year we did, and we wore them on Palm Sunday. I didn't take a photo.

That afternoon we had my mom’s Easter party where I didn’t take a single photo.

At some point we dyed eggs. I have no memory of what day that happened, but I want credit for it because we don’t always dye eggs. Once again, I didn’t take a single photo.

Daisy left for a school trip on Wednesday, so she was gone for a lot of our Easter celebrations.

The day before Easter I spent a lot of time prepping food. I made fruit trays for some friends for General Conference and delivered them. We listened to Conference and worked in the yard. Then we had Scotty’s dad’s Easter party… and I didn’t take a single photo.

The Easter bunny stopped by our house and left a toy hippo for Eva, Michael Vey books for Zoe, and lashes and self-tanner for Daisy for Easter morning. And I didn’t take any pictures.

But…

We made resurrection rolls for breakfast, and I DID take some pictures!

We also lit the Immanuel wreath, which we do as we read The Living Christ.

And we shared the story of Easter as we put out an Easter crèche.

I did lots and lots of food prep that morning. We listened to Conference, and the girls hung out in hammocks in the backyard.

In between sessions of Conference, we went to Scotty’s mom’s house for lunch and stayed for the second session of Conference.

My sister-in-law and I told our mother-in-law she wasn’t allowed to fix any food for Easter. Her only assignment was to provide paper products. It took us weeks of lecturing to get her to abide these instructions (and she tried several times to infiltrate the food prep). I decided to make her a crown and sash that said, "Miss Obedient 2026," which I would present her only if she followed through with her promise to not prepare any food (if she snuck in any extra food, I was going to cross it out and write "Dis Obedient 2026"). I wasn't sure she'd pull it off, but she did! She earned her sash and crown with no alterations (and it nearly killed her)!

It was really weird having half our kids gone for Easter! Daisy got home from her school trip late Sunday night. We've arrived at the phase of life where there's always potential that someone will be missing from holidays and vacations. It's something we're going to have to get used to.

The Fool's Cafe

In 2019 we started a tradition called The Fool's Cafe. We have an April Fool's dinner with a mystery menu. We serve nine dishes in three courses, and each dish has a silly code name, so the kids don't know what they are ordering. Each year, we do this a little differently. One year, instead of a silly, mystery menu, we did a dump meal where we put all the food directly on the table (with a plastic table cloth), and had our kids eat with their (gloved) hands. They didn't like that version very much. Party poopers.

Daisy: Not Amused

I, personally, loved eating that way because, at the end of the meal, there were hardly any dishes, and we were able to just gather up the table cloth and throw it away. We should eat like this often. It's an untapped life hack.

One year I made everyone eat with silly tongs. Sometimes I give them random utensils (enjoy eating with your ladle/spatula/measuring cup). One year we were in California on vacation with Tim and Amber, so we forced them to join in the fun (the only time we've had guests, thus far). I'm pretty sure Amber hid some vegetables she was refusing to eat.

We have a playlist of silly songs we listen to during our meal.

It's fun, and we make it quick and easy. I usually just find random food around the house that we need to get rid of, make up funny names, and use it as a way to use up stuff that isn't getting eaten.

Daisy is going on a school trip tomorrow, so we had our April Fool's dinner a day early so she wouldn't have to miss it.

This was definitely one of the fastest thrown together, low effort Fool's Cafe experiences we've had, but the great thing is, you can blame almost anything on April Fools. Our folding table was lopsided because one leg was extended farther than the other. Our table cloth didn't fit because it was a piece cut off and saved from another party. The asparagus was way overripe. We just called out "April Fools!" to it all.

Burn the food? April fools! Drop a plate and break it? April fools!

It works.

So if you want a fun activity for April Fools, have yourself a silly dinner. Use it to clean out your pantry, and if anything goes wrong, act like it was intentional, and yell out, "April Fools!"

The Two Things I Don’t Need to Change About Myself

I always like to do an assessment when the year changes. I reflect on the past year and think about the coming year and consider whether I want to set some goals. Some years I make resolutions, some years I don’t. I just do what feels right. It has become a lot harder to make and keep resolutions as I’ve gotten older, though. I’m almost rebellious about it now.

The other day I was reading through some New Year writing prompts, and one of the questions was, “What do you not need to change about yourself?” I thought this was  a really good thing to think about - we always focus on what we need to improve, and we don’t always give ourselves credit for the things we are already doing well. I liked this idea so much that I thought maybe it could be my mantra going into the new year. Perhaps instead of setting goals to change or improve this or that, I could just spend a year celebrating what I don’t need to change about myself. So I sat down to make a list, and well, I couldn’t think of anything. For days I racked my brain trying to come up with something about me that doesn’t need improvement. It was actually kind of depressing because I realized I’m not really thriving in any part of my life. I’m just scraping by; constantly in survival mode. I yell at my kids. I’m mean to my husband. I don’t take care of myself. I’m addicted to my phone. I’m lazy. I overspend. I overeat. I’m super judgmental and critical. I’m spiritually defunct. Everything about me could use a bit of improvement. I’m not even trying to be mean to myself - it’s just true! There are a lot of things I could work on.

Finally, after days of deliberation, I came up with two things:

1. Flossing my teeth
2. Grammar

I do not need to change or improve in those areas. I am just fine. I’m really good at flossing. It’s not because I’m morally superior or anything. I just happen to hate having the sensation of anything in my teeth, so I floss all the time. Is my grammar perfect? No. I make errors. But it’s good enough that I can just coast on my grammatical achievements and not worry about improving.

So there you have it, 2026. This year I will not be getting better at flossing or grammar because I don’t have to.

26 x 26

At the end of 2024, I set a goal to complete 25 obscure tasks before 2025. These were things I'd been procrastinating or that were easy to ignore. It ended up feeling amazing to get some of those things done, so I decided to do the same thing again this year. The only problem is that we are heading into 2026, so now I feel like I need to up my game to 26. But then am I stuck increasing my productivity each year? When I'm in my 60's, will I still be blogging, and will I be overwhelming myself with 43 x 43 and so on and so forth? Stick around for the next couple of decades and find out!

But while things are still manageable, here are the 26 obscure tasks I completed before 2026:

1. Scheduled a mammogram (my boobs still hurt from my last one. My initial screening wasn't bad, but I had to go back for additional imaging, and it was torture! My question is... was it the type of imaging I received the second time that hurt me? Or was it the person doing the second imaging that hurt me? I will be asking these questions at my appointment).

2. Compiled all of Nicky's mission emails into a document (with today's technological advances, I am wondering if I did this the easy way, or if there's a more modern route I should be taking. I copied and pasted his emails into a Google doc. Is this something Alexa or Chat Oogie Boogie should be doing for me? I don't even know how to keep up anymore).

3. Cleaned out all the food. I went through our pantry, storage room, fridge, and freezer and got rid of lots of stuff.

4. Canceled all of my Amazon subscribe & save orders. Sometimes I opt for a subscription so I can get a bonus promo. I subscribed to a lot of items during my Christmas shopping adventures, and I needed to go in and cancel them all before they shipped again.

5. Got new cpap supplies. I don’t replace anything as often as I’m supposed to.

6. Called the pediatrician about Daisy’s back. She has complained about back problems for years but has no known cause so we are going to try some physical therapy.

7. Took Eva and Zoe in for haircuts. One of Nicky’s best friends is going to hair school, so we took advantage of her student bookings.

8. Rubbed Vaseline all over my kitchen table to see if it would take out some burn marks (it did not, but at least I tried).

9. Called a medical company to have them fix my name on a bill (I am not Brittany A. Coolidge nor do I know how that became my billing name).

10. Canceled my kids’ Gabb watches. Sorry, Gabb. Your service actually really sucks.

11. Organized my vanity drawers.

12. Sorted through all of my jewelry.

13. Sorted through our puzzles and got rid of a bunch.

14. Installed a banana hook under the kitchen cabinet. I’ve had a fruit bowl with a banana hook on my counter for years, and now I have a hook under the cabinet that folds up when not in use. I’m not sure how I feel about banana hooks. I know people who swear by them and claim their bananas stay good longer. I haven’t noticed a difference, but I have a hook anyway!

15. Went through Nicky’s phone and fixed a bunch of settings so the girls can use it. We’ve kept his phone active while he’s been gone because he has so many accounts tied to his phone number that we are monitoring while he’s gone. We’ve had to get text verification codes several times. So we figure if we’re keeping it active, we might as well make it useful.

16. Cleaned out my notes app. I try to keep my notes app up to date, but sometimes I find really old shopping lists and the like.

17. Did a whitening treatment on my garments. Nothing like bringing your undies back to life in a giant pot while your kid repeatedly ask what’s for dinner.

18. Cleaned my shoes. I have two pairs of “main” shoes right now - one Hoka and one Nike. They both needed a good scrub. I spilled pumpkin roll batter on the Hokas over a month ago.

19. Went through all my clothes and shoes. Boxed some up and donated others.

20. Canceled Audible. And used up all my credits. I sign up for Audible when they have good promos, and this time I let my membership keep going for way too long simply out of laziness.

21. Organized my pills. It sounds bad, but I take 9 pills a day. Most are vitamins and supplements, which, to be honest, I don’t know if I even buy into. I’ve never taken a vitamin or supplement that I feel did anything beneficial. However, I’ve been dealing with neuropathy for the past year and my feet had been finally starting to feel better. Then I didn’t take my pills for over a week and my feet started hurting really bad again. So now I’m wondering if something I’m taking was helping with my neuropathy. The problem is, I take so many pills that I have no idea which one(s) - if any at all - are helping my neuropathy so I have to keep taking all of them.

(My neurologist recommended B vitamins and folate, so it could be those).

22. Set up my budgeting notebook for 2026.

23. Put away the Christmas decorations.

24. Cleaned behind and under the oven.

25. Went through all of my food apps and made sure my birthday is on my profile so I can enjoy all my free birthday perks. Also started making a list of my free birthday perks and their expiration dates.

26. Took each of my kids on a 1:1 date. Except for Nicky (for obvious reasons).

Eve and Day

Christmas is officially checked off my (figurative) to do list. We did it, folks. We made it another year.

The next one will be here before we know it. Let us brace ourselves!

In the meantime, here is how Eve and Day went…

Eve

The past few years we’ve gone to see the lights downtown on Christmas Eve morning. I realize that this seems like torture to most of the population, but we give our kids the option to stay home and sleep in and every one of them has always chosen to come with us. We leave home around 6:30 a.m. The lights are on until 8:00. We get to see the lights and the sunrise, and there are no crowds.

After we went to see the lights, we went to breakfast. We invited Scotty’s dad and step-mom, and they met us there.

We spent the middle of the day getting our house picked up and finishing our Christmas prep.

We always spend Christmas Eve night with Scotty’s dad’s side of the family. We have dinner, Santa comes, and then we have a talent show.

This year’s talents included doing a Mad Lib, “show me something to lift and I will lift it,” some random dancing and singing, storytelling, and a human pyramid.

On our way home, Zoe asked us to track Santa to see where he was. He could have been anywhere in the world, but he was 35 seconds from Puerto Rico. That means Santa left our Christmas Eve party and headed to Nicky!

Day

I didn’t sleep much Christmas Eve (or any of the 23 days leading up to it), so I was wide awake around 3:00 a.m. I eventually got out of bed and read my scriptures and started making breakfast.

The girls all woke up around 6:30. My mom came over to watch them open presents and then we had breakfast (biscuits and gravy, sausage, hash browns, and eggs).

After my mom left, we cleaned up a bit and relaxed while the girls messed with their Christmas spoils. Scotty’s mom and step-dad stopped by to see what the kids got for Christmas.  At noon we went to my mom’s house for lunch.

In the afternoon, Scotty’s dad and step-mom came over to see what the kids got for Christmas. Then the neighbor kids came over to play, and we took everyone up to Scotty’s mom’s house for cheesecake.

Nicky called us in the morning for a few minutes and watched the girls open a few presents. He had to be quick because he had a district meeting. In the afternoon, he called us again and told us that he got the best Christmas present ever! He caught his first iguana!

(He’s been trying for five months!)

In the evening, he called once more and told us that he’d spent most of Christmas Day stuck at the church on an exchange while his companion handled some kind of emergency (we get the story later). He went to Wendy’s for dinner. It sounded like a really sad Christmas. But he said it’s okay because of the iguana.

Now we are all in Christmas recovery mode. We’re exhausted. We’re slowly cleaning everything up. And we’re sick of Christmas food.

But the chaos doesn’t end here. Oh, no! Because we have birthdays and New Year coming right up! Starting with tomorrow when a certain son of mine turns 19.
