With only a few more weeks of school and only a few more weeks with Nicky at home, I’m going to have a lot of “happy it happened” posts so I can look back at them later and sob like a big baby. Nicky starts his mission on June 30th, and that is way too soon. There’s no time. There’s no pause.
Here are some “happy it happened” moments from this week:
I Nicky answered a girl to a dance for the last time.
Nicky performed in two numbers for the cheer showcase - one was for the powder puff male cheer team and the other was a partner dance with the cheer captain, Amelia.
He was a little embarrassed about the costume.
But how was Nicky able to dance with his leg injury? He maybe shouldn’t have, but I let him make his own choice. I took him to his first physical therapy appointment that morning.
Pardon the hairy leg, but this is the back of Nicky’s thigh three weeks post-injury.* I took this photo so he could see what it looks like. His response was, “I didn’t know it was that bad!” And then he still danced.
Nicky’s out of his boot and has physical therapy twice a week for the time being.
Nicky officially quit his job. This is bittersweet. He has worked at the rock wall at our local rec center for about a year and a half. It’s been a good job for him. He has worked with kids doing rock climbing classes, and he has been well-loved by the students… and their moms.
This might need its own post, but Nicky finally got to go skydiving on Friday (rescheduled from April 7th due to high winds).
He loved it!
We started sending out grad announcements!

*In case you missed the story previously, Nicky was sitting on the handrail in the line for Space Mountain when he went to Disneyland with school three weeks ago. A girl jokingly pushed him, and he fell backwards. He had his feet tucked under the lower bar, and when he fell, his left calf ripped. In the photo of his thigh above, the line is where the bar was when he fell backwards. He was in a boot for two weeks with three foam wedges under his heel. He removed one wedge every five days. Now he has physical therapy for an undetermined amount of time. They’re focusing on lengthening the muscle and working out the scar tissue.
