That’s the Power of Love

I’ve mentioned a few times on my blog over the years that my first crush was Marty McFly. The original Back to the Future is one of my favorite movies. The other two are fun, but nothing holds a candle to the first one.

For Christmas I purchased “ticketed experiences” for some of my family. For Scotty, Phantom of the Opera. For Daisy, Derek Hough. And for Chloe, Back to the Future the Musical.

Back to the Future was last week. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I hoped it would be good, but in a world where everything is made into a Broadway production, I’m losing a little interest. But Zoe loves Back to the Future and theatre, so it was a great gift option for her! And I was curious and needed to find out how it was.

Within the first five minutes, I already had a hunch that I would want to see it again. The costumes were right out of the movie. The actors were fantastic (though no one can truly mimic Christopher Lloyd - it was more like Doc Brown if he’d been played by Dustin Hoffman or Henry Winkler, but sometimes you just have to embrace the actor as their own version of the character).

I felt like I was watching Back to the Future happen right before my eyes! My favorite part was when Marty was playing the red guitar at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. It felt like he was really there! Marty McFly!!! I shed a tear.

The show was delightful, in the opinion of this Back to the Future junkie. They made a few changes to the plot, but that’s kind of how it goes. It was funny, and the special effects were great. It had the essence of a Disney ride! The DeLorean was magical!

The theatre was offering student rush tickets (discounted tickets with a student ID - first come, first served), so two days later I went back with Daisy to see if we could get in. We made it! We were on the fourth row, stage right. Daisy got a coveted view of Marty McFly in his Calvin Klein underwear.

I talked up the show to some friends and convinced a couple of them to go.

Sometimes being passionate about something makes me feel alone in the world, so it was nice of them to indulge me a bit. I realized my level of fandom is a bit intense, though. What can I say? That’s the power of love! And I love Back to the Future!
