How We Halloweened

I can't believe Halloween just barely happened. I feel like it should have ended weeks ago. We've been Halloween-ing for a loooong time.

Zoe's Halloween art is top notch

Last Sunday, the kids carved their pumpkins.

On Tuesday, Daisy and Eva had their dance class Halloween parties.

On Wednesday night, we started a Halloween puzzle.

On Thursday, the kids got to dress up for school. Daisy, Zoe, and Eva picked out costumes from Spirit Halloween last week. Nicky wanted to be a stick of butter and had dreams of making his costume out of cardboard boxes. That's not a very school-friendly plan, though, so on Wednesday night, I made him a quick Charlie Brown costume:

The elementary did a "reverse parade," and the principal went around to all the classes and filmed each kid. Eva refused to dress up for school. She has never "Halloweened" well.

That night, Daisy and Zoe got to attend their first primary activities since March. Both age groups had a little COVID-friendly Halloween party. The girls were so excited, and they both had a lot of fun.

The kids were home from school on Friday for distance learning. We did a little bit of sidewalk chalk.

That day I made three pumpkin rolls - one to eat, one to freeze, and one to take to a friend.

Can't stop. Won't stop.

On Friday night, we met a few family members in a school parking lot and did a little Trunk or Treat.

As usual, Eva refused to dress up.

We weren't very prepared, so we used our emergency roll of toilet paper to decorate our trunk and the barf bags from the glove box to collect candy.

The kids had fun, and they got to see some of their littler cousins. They also ran up and down a hill several times which was great because I've been letting them watch waaaaaay too much TV lately.

On Halloween morning, Scotty and I walked to WinCo and bought stuff to make pizza. That afternoon, we each made our own pizzas and cooked them on the smoker.

My creation (BBQ chicken)

We had (and still have) a lot of pizza. The kids loved being able to make their own.

Scotty and I wanted to do something fun to hand out candy. I'd seen the idea to put the candy on skewers or plastic knives and stick them in the lawn. I liked the idea except for the part where children end up with a skewer or knife. Then Scotty had the idea to put the candy on glow sticks!

In our minds, the glow sticks would light up and look super fun in our yard.

We got them set up right before sunset as we were getting ready to leave. We used a screwdriver to make the holes in the ground.

After dark, I stopped at home to see how the glow sticks looked, and you could hardly see them. I was so disappointed! I thought we were on to something there, but they were lame, and the candy I picked was gross.

COVID Halloween fail.

I think ten of them were gone... if that.

We weren't really sure what to do for Halloween, so we figured we would start off by Trick or Treating at my mom's and Scotty's mom's houses and then scope out the neighborhood and see what the vibe was.

The kids ended up doing a little bit of Trick or Treating around the neighborhood. Most people were outside handing out candy, using a candy chute, or had a bowl of candy set out. It was definitely different this year, but it worked.

After we collected some candy, we came home to watch the new Witches.

I signed up for the free 7-day trial for HBO Max so we could watch it, and well... let's just say... I'm glad it was free.

We now have yet another COVID holiday in the books.

What's going to happen between now and Thanksgiving?
