Food: It's Where the Heart Is

Do you like to cook?

Yes.

What are some of your family’s favorite dishes?

Thinking of the family I currently feed... chicken cordon bleu, chicken pot pie, German pancakes, various kinds of tacos, hot dogs and hamburgers, breakfast casserole, etc.

Do you prefer sweet or savory foods?

Both!

What’s your favorite ingredient to cook with?

I've never really thought about this before. I don't think I have one. But I will say I'm always a little intrigued by ground mustard. When a soup or casserole calls for ground mustard, it's usually going to be a good one!

What’s the most exotic dish you’ve ever tried?

Probably escargots.

What’s the most comforting food you make?

Any type of bread. There's just something comforting about warm bread in any form. It can be a roll or a breadstick... you can slather it in butter or put some jam on it... dip it in a sauce or soup... It's kind of like a food hug. It just warms your soul!

What’s your favorite thing to cook for others?

Anything, if they like it!

What’s the most unique restaurant you’ve ever eaten at?

One time my friends Michelle, Lynsie, and I stopped at a restaurant in Cedar City, and it didn't have a menu. The owner just said, "What do you want me to make?" It was really weird. It was actually pretty annoying. Like I'm supposed to know what ingredients you have back there? And then I have to tell you what to make?

I don't think that restaurant lasted very long.

Do you eat breakfast?

Yes. I spent most of my youth skipping breakfast due to laziness, lack of time, and not knowing what to eat. Then at school I was always starving. Now I cherish and enjoy breakfast and never skip it.

What’s your favorite meal of the day?

All of the above.

What’s a food you didn’t like as a kid but love now?

Ribs. I'll have to write a story about that someday.

What’s a favorite vacation food?

Sourdough bread and butter at California Adventure. There's probably better sourdough out there, but there's something special about eating it out of a bag in the line for Radiator Springs Racers

Is there a dish you make that people request often?

My friend Carlie will often request corn dip and no-bake cookies. My mother-in-law requests corn dip, baked beans, pretzel jello, and stuffing.

Do you like spicy food?

Just mild spice for me. Too much spice, and I can't taste anything.

Do you have a favorite soup?

There are a lot of soups I like. But I also get sick of soup really fast, so I try to eat it sparingly so I can enjoy it. One of my favorite soups I've ever had was a cheddar cauliflower soup at a random soup restaurant in the mall when I was a teenager. I used to work at the mall, and I'd go get that soup often. I've never found an equivalent! (The restaurant closed a long, long time ago).

Do you have any food allergies or intolerances?

No.

Maybe.

But mostly no.

What’s your favorite vegetable-based dish?

I just spent 20 minutes trying to decide what qualifies as a vegetable-based dish, so I don't think I'm ready to make any sort of commitment here.

Do you have a favorite kind of rice?

Am I supposed to? I mean... Jasmine is pretty fetch.

How often do you go grocery shopping?

I don't know how to answer this anymore because I rarely go physically grocery shopping. I almost exclusively have our food delivered, and I order it as needed. On average, I probably do a grocery order every week and a half-ish.

Do you shop from a list?

Of course!

Do you meal plan?

Yes.

How often do you eat meals as a family?

Probably three times a week. A lot of weeknights require us to eat in waves depending on who's home. We usually eat breakfast together on Sunday mornings.

If you had to eat something right now, what would you eat and why?

Right this second, the only thing that sounds good is water because I'm full but thirsty. If I had to eat something, it would probably be a chicken salad croissant because that's what's readily available in my kitchen right now with very little effort needed (dinner leftovers from last night).

No pressure. Sheesh.

How about the aforementioned corn dip?

2 (11 oz) cans Mexicorn, drained (sometimes sold as "fiesta corn" depending on the brand)
1 C mayo
1 C sour cream
1-2 green onions, diced
1 (4/5 oz) can diced green chilies
1/3 cup diced jalapenos (from can or jar)
9 ounces shredded Mexican blend cheese
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Mix it all together and eat it with tortilla chips
