Happy It Happened: Week 3

Here are this week’s “happy it happened” moments:

Nicky has pulled a lot of light hearted pranks on his theater teacher over the past two years. There’s a long story that I’m not going to tell right now, but as a result of Nicky’s pranks, a cardboard cut out of his teacher has been a popular feature at many events this school year. The other day Daisy mentioned that it would have been funny if we’d taken the cutout to Nicky’s senior photo shoot to have his photo taken with it. That gave me an idea to make a fake graduation announcement for Nicky’s teacher.

We snapped a couple of photos with cutout and the next day, Nicky presented his teacher with this gem:

She got a kick out of it, and I printed a copy for myself to hang with all the other graduation announcements in my living room.

This week was Nicky’s final school play. It was the last time I would see him on stage (he doesn't plan to do any theatre post high school). I was prepared to have a good cry, but in the end, it wasn’t so. I wasn’t sad. Didn’t feel a thing, in fact. This might be because Nicky didn’t have a very significant role (due to tennis), and his heart wasn't really in this play.

The production was The Play That Goes Wrong, and it was a fantastic selection for the group of theatre kids this year. An absolute riot! I loved seeing Nicky’s friends in their roles. They were so hysterical.

The graduates

On Saturday, Nicky went to senior ball. Scotty and I went to the dance and helped serve refreshments.

This is me with my date Rowlf getting photobombed by Christie. Christie’se daughter, Briana (who ended up getting crowned Queen at the dance) always carries a stuffie (or a few), and Rowlf is her current choice. She entrusted him to my care for a brief while.

Did I take any pictures of my son? Nope. He just avoids me and calls me Beverly Goldberg, so I stay out of his way. But he made sure to take photos with all the other chaperones there.

Sunday was Mother's Day. Since Nicky won't be around for the next two Mother's Days, I made sure to get a fun reenactment photo to hold me over.

There was a bit of joy in getting to have Nicky around for the whole day. I didn't hold Mother's Day over his head at all, but inside I was secretly thinking, "Ha ha! He has to choose me today because it's Mother's Day, and he's leaving on a mission in a few weeks!"

We hung out in the backyard for a while in the afternoon, and Nicky rediscovered his love for his chickens. He even said, “I forgot how much I love chickens!”

The chickens are one of many things that have dropped out of his life in the past year.

Then later in the afternoon he fell asleep, so I stole his phone and posted a tribute to myself on his Instagram stories.

(Okay, when he calls me Beverly Goldberg, he's not exactly wrong).

My favorite "happy it happened" moment, though, happened last night. I was blessed to have a lot of quality time with Nicky and Daisy yesterday, and at one point, Daisy was working on her poetry portfolio for English class. Last week she texted me at work and told me she was writing a poem about Nicky in class and couldn't stop crying.

While she was working on her portfolio, Nicky came in the kitchen and started reading her poems. I didn't think she would let him read the one she wrote about him (I thought she would save it to share with him closer to leaving on his mission), but when he started reading it, she didn't stop him.

After he read the poem, Daisy burst into tears, and then he gave her a big hug and told her how much he liked it. It was really sweet. Nicky and Daisy have a special relationship, and Daisy is going to have a really hard time with Nicky being gone. That was my best Mother's Day gift and the ultimate "happy it happened" moment from this week.
